DEATH-CURIOUS DEBUT: CALL ME MORGUE ON SALE NOW

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Morgan Moran, writer-turned-funeral home worker, has published her debut novel, Call Me Morgue, which is now available for purchase.

Moran, 36, is a UW-Green Bay graduate and fell in love with writing during her time at the school. After graduating, she spent some time writing in a variety of formats, such as freelance and social media, but eventually turned her attention to something most would find unusual: funeral homes. That’s when her blog, Call Me Morgue, was born. One of Moran’s former professors found the blog and insisted it was the perfect project for her Teaching Press, a student-run book press.

Call Me Morgue, Moran’s debut novel named after her blog, chronicles her experiences working at a funeral home. Reverent essays and thought-provoking questions are juxtaposed with irreverent illustrations and witty jokes to make the idea of death and funeral homes palatable to readers. “It’s helpful to expose people to it because it becomes a little less scary,” Moran says.

Her career path might seem unorthodox to some, and Moran explains that Call Me Morgue was written for those readers that might be “death-curious” about what goes on in a funeral home but also for those that want to do something “brave” with their lives and pursue what makes them happy.

Moran currently lives in London with her husband but still moonlights at her Green Bay funeral home whenever she visits. “Everything is right in the world when I’m there,” the writer says about her newfound passion. Despite its heaviness, she loves being able to provide comfort to grieving families and the deceased person. “It’s a look into someone’s love story.”

Call Me Morgue was published by the students and interns at UW-Green Bay’s Teaching Press and is available for purchase through the Teaching Press website. Any questions can be directed to Dr. Rebecca Meacham, director of the Teaching Press.
